KIIT Student’s Tragic Death: Nepal PM Intervenes, Odisha Govt Responds

A shocking incident at Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT), Bhubaneswar, has sparked international attention. A 20-year-old Nepalese BTech student allegedly died by suicide in her hostel room after facing repeated harassment on campus. The tragic incident has led to the arrest of a fellow student and widespread protests from Nepalese students demanding justice.

Harassment Complaints Ignored?

According to reports, the deceased student had repeatedly complained about harassment by a 21-year-old student from Lucknow. However, her complaints allegedly went unheard, leading to the devastating outcome. Following her death, authorities arrested the accused and initiated an investigation into the matter.

Nepal PM’s Urgent Intervention

As the incident gained media attention, Nepal’s Prime Minister K P Sharma Oli stepped in, expressing concern over reports of forced eviction of Nepalese students from KIIT’s hostels. Taking to social media, he assured that Nepal’s government was working through diplomatic channels to ensure justice and support for the affected students.

“It has come to our attention through media and social media that a Nepali student has died in the hostel… and that Nepali students have been forcibly evicted. The government is working on this matter through diplomatic channels,” PM Oli posted on Facebook.

Diplomatic Action & Support for Nepalese Students

To assist the students, the Nepalese embassy dispatched officials to Bhubaneswar to provide counseling and support. The embassy also coordinated efforts to give students the choice to either stay in their hostels or return home based on their preferences.

Odisha Government’s Response: A Step Towards Normalcy

As tensions rose, the Odisha government instructed KIIT authorities to allow Nepalese students to return to campus. The institution later issued a statement saying:

“All-out efforts have been made to restore normalcy in the campus and hostels to resume academic activities. An appeal is made to all our Nepali students who have or plan to leave the campus to return.”

Campus Protests and Viral Social Media Clips

Earlier, Nepalese students staged massive protests against the university’s alleged inaction towards the deceased student’s complaints. Videos of clashes between campus guards and protesting students soon went viral, leading KIIT to announce a sudden closure for all international students from Nepal.

“They are hereby directed to vacate the university campus immediately,” the authorities declared.

Forced Eviction Amidst Exams?

Many Nepalese students were reportedly forced to leave the campus with little to no prior notice. A student at Cuttack railway station was quoted as saying:

“Everything happened too fast. We were told to vacate our hostel rooms and dropped at the railway station. We have an exam scheduled for February 28.

Odisha CM’s Assurance: A Commitment to Justice

Odisha’s Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi took immediate steps to address the growing concerns. The state’s higher education minister, Suryabanshi Suraj, criticized KIIT’s decision to evict Nepalese students, stating:

“The authorities should have treated the matter with utmost seriousness. Given India’s positive relationship with Nepal, such actions should not have been taken.”

Conclusion: What’s Next for KIIT and Nepalese Students?

With the Odisha government stepping in and Nepal’s diplomatic involvement, the situation at KIIT is gradually stabilizing. While Nepalese students have been assured of their return, the incident has raised serious concerns about campus safety, harassment policies, and international student rights.

The coming days will reveal whether justice is truly served, and if KIIT can rebuild the trust of its diverse student community.
